What Role Deduplication Feature Plays in NAS Appliances


Data deduplication is a feature of data archival solutions that does not copy the same files of the original data every time it is stored. Instead, it just adds a reference point to the original file and deletes the extra copies of the same file. This is done in order to provide the maximum storage scape to the clients.
What is Deduplication Feature?
As the name suggests, deduplication is about the opposite of duplication. This feature assures that there are no duplicate copies of the same file residing uselessly in the storage.
The optimum usage of storage space does not only provide more space but also offer easy and speedy management of data load. Less time is taken when there are no unnecessary files of data which need to be retrieved o every command.
Why Deduplication Should be There in NAS Appliance?
NAS appliances are scalable and offer maximum or even limitless storage to the enterprises. If Enterprise NAS storage is equipped with the function of deduplication, it can further enhance the performance and the efficiency of the NAS appliances.
The scale-out feature of NAS appliances makes more and more data come their way and therefore if there is a deduplication function, maximized and optimum usage of storage space is crucial. It is because not every organization can afford to add nodes to the infrastructure whenever felt necessary. In this regard, it becomes very crucial to make the maximum use of the available storage space before adding an extra node to the NAS storage infrastructure.
Significance Impact of Deduplication Feature
You may think that there will not be a significant impact on using the deduplication feature in the storage, as there might not be a lot of duplicate copies of data. This is not the right assumption though as it is believed that this feature can make a reduction in the storage capacity up to twenty times.
The efficiency of the deduplication feature depends on how much data is there in the data set. More data means more copies will be there. The second thing to determine this is the ratio that is set for the deduplication feature to implement it.
If the volume of the data and the ratio is high, it can offer the maximum data storage space optimization which may be up to 90 percent even. Remember, we are talking about the enterprises and business organizations which use loads of data, and not about the personal computers of an individual. This is why we may not get an idea of how much a dedup can benefit a storage capacity.

Data deduplication is a feature that is a must in the SAN Solutions and other storage appliances also. It shreds the extensive load of data which is not actually useful because the same purpose can be fulfilled with the reference pointers that are used to fetch the required original file that is the only copy of the data. The role of deduplication is therefore very high in NAS appliances as it enhances and further makes it efficient.
